To all that is unresolved within your heart
“We’ve become a society seeking instant gratification. We want simple answers, clear pathways to success… Life does not work that way. And instead of looking for answers all the time, my wish for you is that you get comfortable living the questions.”
Jacqueline Novogratz
Have we ever not lived in question?
Have we ever not longed?
I haven’t. And, the solace I pull from that knowledge is the ease of its place within my life. I’m not saying it is comfortable.
Sitting alone, with longing, grief, question…these are the difficult moments in life.
“Are we too enthralled with the answers these days? Are we afraid of questions, especially those that linger too long? We seem to have come to a phase in civilization marked by a voracious appetite for knowledge, in which the growth of information is exponential and, perhaps more important, its availability easier and faster than ever.”
Stuart Firestein
Time has taught me that sometimes no answer is the answer.
Also that there are answers best unknown; there are declines that steer me for a reason.
Life rarely is transparent.
And yet, we are born with a desire to know.
“I want to beg you, as much as I can, dear sir, to be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”
Rainer Rilke
Or is no answer the answer.
Life has never made it simple or easy. And yet, it tells us to carry grace in the other hand. The grace we wish for ourselves, we are also to give our life.
The grace we wish to live in must extend to all the sharp edges for it to be so.
We are all in grief over the unknowns of our life.
We are all longing for some unmet desire.
We are all full of hope, despite our dark past.
We are all here together, living the questions of our hearts
