The best life advice I co-created with my Uncle.
On my 21st birthday, my Uncle noted to me he hoped his children would turn out like me.
This was both interesting and thought-provoking to me. The places I’d been and the things I had done weren’t all things he would wish his children would do if he knew. And yet, I realised from the outside it looked like I was going places. I was settled. I was studying and working. And, I was content to do so because I had let myself live as much as I desired in previous years, leaving me satisfied to now come into a more responsible phase.
We have itches to scratch and ideas to explore, places to go and things to see, curiosities to follow that lead us to who we are and only in bravely living our own adventures are we able to stand steadily on the ground of our life, even if it is for but a moment, or for a party.
I told my uncle that my present focus is because I have allowed myself to live. I went to concerts, I danced on the beach at night with friends, I explored, unravelled and revelled in my youth.
I realised with the response to my Uncle, that our periods of settlement come from our periods of upheaval and unsureness. It comes from our bravery to explore where we are called and to do the crazy things we know we can but fear we cannot. We will experience cycles of upheaval and periods of settlement. It is never all one or the other but a mix and cycle of ebbs and flows.
Life is messy — live it.
Curiosities call — follow them.
The ground is shaky — fall, for there is something down there to find, that helps up stand up all the more tall.
You are your gift, unwrap it.
Life is messy and the bravest, most extraordinary thing you can do is live the life in front of you. This was both interesting and thought-provoking to me.
