No direction doesn't mean we have no where to go
Can we trust the unfolding so much that we will step into the dark.
Our lives are full, brimming, and overwhelming. And yet, we will wonder where are we taking ourselves in our life’s journey.
A sinking feeling sets in at that thought. That with all that doing, there is no direction.
Only this isn’t true.
We might not see a direction, but it doesn’t mean we are without one.
We live a life that unfolds visually only in the present reality. Yet we know, having existed to the age we are, that a future lies ahead.
Feeling like we have no direction because we cannot see one is a natural, understandable struggle in our minds which are constantly searching for meaning and guidance. We have this innate knowing of how valuable life is in one hand, the other holding the awareness of how fleeting it is, and in the middle, a sense of panic cannot help but grip us from time to time, wanting to know that we are making the best of our most valuable gift — life.
The reassurance is in looking back. We can see we have climbed difficult mountains in our lives many times and come through. We have celebrated wonderful things, enjoyed splendid moments, and felt awe, wonder, happiness and joy, even if they are not what we are experiencing at this moment.
Looking back is our best reassurance that whilst we cannot see ahead, the trajectory includes all the facets of life. That whilst we cannot know what will unfold, we do know it will be a mix of difficult and also joyous things, and when combined, we have a life worth living. Living the life before us is the best answer to our birth.
You have somewhere to go. You really do.
You and I don’t know where that is yet, but we do know that we can continue on in the dark, trusting the gifts of this human life to lead us where we are meant to.
I listen,
no for a single audible word,
not for anything that can be heard,
for a direction as to where to begin,
an answer that comes from within.
Beautifully written. One of the great thinkers said we can only live our life forwards, and understand it backwards.
