🌱 Nature's Metaphors: Uplifting Our Creative Process Through Life Cycles
There have never been clearer signs that we all bloom at different times
There have never been clearer signs that we all bloom at different times.
The cold, dewy air hints at numbness on my cheeks. Small patches of frost crunch underfoot amongst the gravel. Beside my footsteps, clusters of mushrooms peek through the damp earth, a reminder of nature's quiet persistence.
While the majority (55%) of Substack users from the United States are sharing sun-soaked photos turn to fall, I am among the 2% of Australian users relishing these serene Spring mornings. On the bush path, these nature cycles have me thinking about the cycles of life and how they mirror the cycles of creativity.
Just as the seasons change, so too do the phases of our creative journey. From the initial spark of inspiration to the necessary periods of rest and renewal, the creative process is a living, breathing entity that follows its own natural rhythm. Recognising and aligning with these cycles can transform our creative journey.
I get the feeling there is something in that. After I wrote about the eight phases of the creative cycle, I wanted to explore the parallels between the cycles of life and the cycles of creativity to uncover how each phase has its own unique power and wisdom.
Relating the cycles of creativity to the cycles of life is a powerful way to work with the creative journey.
1. Birth: Inspiration and Idea Generation
Life Cycle: Birth is the beginning, filled with potential and newness.
Creativity Cycle: This is the stage where new ideas are conceived. You experience a burst of inspiration and curiosity. It's a time to explore, brainstorm, and let your imagination run wild. Fill the journal!
2. Growth: Development and Experimentation
Life Cycle: Growth involves learning, experimenting, and developing new skills.
Creativity Cycle: During this phase, we start developing our ideas. Try coming at your idea from a different angle. Experimentation helps us to refine our concepts, it expands our options and adds dimensions to the idea.
3. Maturity: Refinement and Execution
Life Cycle: Maturity is about stability, honing skills, and realising potential.
Creativity Cycle: Here, you refine your ideas and focus on executing them with precision. You might face challenges and need to make adjustments, but this is the stage where your creative vision starts taking a clear and polished form.
4. Decline: Completion and Evaluation
Life Cycle: Decline is often seen as a time of winding down and reflection.
Creativity Cycle: This phase involves finishing your creative project and evaluating its impact. It’s a time for critique and reflection, understanding what worked well and what could be improved in the future.
5. Renewal: Rest and Renewal
Life Cycle: After decline comes a period of rest, which is essential for renewal.
Creativity Cycle: After completing a project, take time to rest and recharge. This phase is crucial for avoiding burnout and allowing new ideas to germinate. Reflection during this period helps you gain insights for your next cycle of creativity.
Practical Tips to lean into the power of these phases
Journaling: Write, draw, keep cuttings, pictures, leaves, whatever helps you think wider and take in different views. Try tracking your creative cycles. Reflect on your experiences and progress. You might fight after recording your cycle over several projects you have your own unique cycle.
Schedule in the Phases: Try running your next creative endeavour through each of the creative phases outlined above. Does it help or hinder? Would a different order make a difference?
Balance: Give time to each phase. Make the rest and renewal as important as the inspiration phase. Utilising these phases in your creative journey brings about a harmonious and sustainable approach.
Leaning into learning about our creative cycles allows us to honour them in ourselves and in others.
Our cycles bloom at different times than others.
Your winter will be in another’s summer.
Never feel bad about your quiet times/your winter just because another is shining.
Don’t worry about shining when others are quietly resting and planning.
We want to be inspired by you and cheer you on.

I love this! I live in Thailand so, I'm in a perpetual summer but since I'm American I am severely missing Autumn! Creativity definitely comes in cycles, and I loved the way you explained each season and shared different tips!
Loved reading this on this beautiful spring day! Thanks for putting a creative pep in my step and helping me lean into my inner seasons even more 🥰💜💫
